Situation in Darfur Under Control: Minister

The Minister of Humanitarian Affaris, Engineer Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, said that the conditions in Darfur are under control as regards accommodation for the displaced people.
This came when the minister was addressing the National Assembly Wednesday on measures taken by the government regarding the accommodation of around 179,000 displaced citizens in Darfur states. The minister indicated that the national voluntary organizations, the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Islamic Development Bank, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Algeria are extending assistance to the affected people in Darfur. He stated that the Conference in Geneva was the first to respond to the call of Darfur, adding that it has pledged to allocate $ 299 million in support of the affected people in Darfur, making available in advance $ 71 million. The Minister of Humanitarian Aid said national financial support to the displaced from January - May 2004 reached 580 million Sudanese dinars in addition to $ 100,000, affirming the government's commitment to supporting the people of Darfur through the national strategic storage and the Ministry of Finance. Hamid said that the government and the UN have a joint plan to provide 12,000 tons of food supplies every month as of July till the end of this year, pointing out that national support has amounted to 7,510 tons of foodstuff.
